Missouri Dealers Association 2017 Annual Charity Tour
Nov 30, 2017
The Missouri Rental Dealers Association has announced the dates and location for its 2017 charity tour. During October and November, members of the association will provide community service and financial contributions as part of a six-city charity tour of food banks across Missouri (stories below). The six stops include the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri in Columbia, the Food Bank for Southeast Missouri in Doniphan, the Stoddard County Mission Gospel Food Pantry in Dexter, The Convoy of Hope in Springfield, The Harvesters in Kansas City and the USO in St. Louis.
"This is an excellent time to give back to the communities that support us," says John Cleek, Jr., MRDA's president. "It will also give store employees the opportunity to meet people from different companies as well as allowing all of us to work as one for a common goal and a terrific cause."
In addition to volunteering their time at the food banks, MRDA members will present each worthy cause with a donation of $1,000, which according to the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri is enough to buy $21,000 of food. Cleek is urging all Missouri rental dealers to participate, "I promise this will be a very rewarding experience and our third year in a row to help those in need."
To sign up for a service project, contact the chair of the charity stop near you and include how many employees will participate. For more information about the charity tour, contact John Cleek, Jr., jcleekjr@cleeks.com.

Members of the Missouri Rental Dealers Association met in early October to provide community service and financial contributions as part of its third annual charity tour. Seventeen employees from Aaron's, Central File and Rental City packed more than 750 backpacks for the organization's BackSnack Program and presented the worthy cause with a donation of $1,000.
The Harvesters is a regional food bank serving 26 counties in northwestern Missouri and northeastern Kansas. Its BackSnack program provides a weekly backpack filled with nutritious food (water, fruit snacks, oatmeal, cereal, hummus, crackers, canned fruit and vegetables, stew, rice and beans) for schoolchildren to take home over the weekend. More than 100,000 children in the Harvesters' service area receive free and reduced-price school meals during the week, and many of those are at risk of hunger on weekends.
MRDA presented a $1,000 donation that will help the worthy cause provide 3,000 meals for those in need. "Your generous donation is something to be proud of," says Nancy Steinacker, Harvesters' corporate engagement manager. "We appreciate your on-going support."

Rent-to-own associates from Cleek's Inc. dba Aaron's Sales & Lease and Rent One volunteered their time and donated a $1,000 check to The Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri in Columbia, Missouri.
MRDA participated in The Food Bank's Buddy Pack program that is designed to provide nutritious food over the weekend to children who rely on free or reduced-price lunches during the school year. Buddy Packs typically contain two ready-to-eat entrees, a fruit cup, cereal, shelf-stable milk and a nutritional bar. During the school year, the Buddy Pack program distributes food to 7,500 children in more than 150 schools each week.
"It's always rewarding to give back to the community and help those in need," says MRDA President John Cleek, Jr. "This is a great team building service project for our association and a chance to work together with associates from other companies."
A member of Feeding America, The Food Bank is able to work with manufacturers, wholesalers, processors, growers, retailers and restaurants to secure donations and food at reduced costs. Because of these partnerships, they are able to turn every dollar into $21 worth of groceries. With the $1000 donation presented to The Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri they will be able to purchase $21,000 worth of groceries that will help feed thousands of those in need.

Participants grabbed some lunch and had a chance to freshen up before that evenings events.
Attendees reconvened at the Vendor Showcase where they were greeted with a cocktail reception, raffle and any last bits of buying and networking with vendors. Dinner and the annual awards banquet shortly followed the Vendor Showcase.

APRO's Executive Director, Bill Keese, then went over his upcoming retirement and the board's plans for an Executive Director search. He thanked all of those in the RTO industry and stands by his notion of unparalleled camaraderie. He closed with highlighting the importance to vote in this year's presidential election.

Senator Gary Romine announced and handed out trophies to the winners of the 4-Man Scramble golf tournament followed by Tiger John Cleek who followed suit with the winners of the Bass Fishing Tournament. See results below.
MRDA's Executive Director, Ken Steiner closed the awards presentation celebrating his 20th year of managing the association and trade show. He shared his gratitude for the vast interest of vendors in showing at the exhibit hall, confessing it was more than they were able to accommodate this year and thus left a handful [of vendors] on a waiting list. MRDA now has a fast growing list of vendors set for next year's show and encouraged interested parties to secure their spot for 2017's trade show as soon as possible.
"It's been such a great journey of working with dealers and vendors. I've never had so many friends. When talking with vendors, I always say, I'm not a dealer, I'm a friend."

Big News at 2016 APRO Convention
May 17, 2016
This year was a great APRO show in Cincinnati, where the Missouri Rental Dealers Association had some outstanding achievements as an association and the people that make it up! Details below:
1) "Tiger" John Cleek received the highest honor you can receive at APRO as he was the recipient of the "Lifetime Achievement Award"!!! As you all know, Tiger was a co-founder of MRDA in 1987, has served on the board ever since, 2 terms as MRDA President, and APRO board member for 13 years, chairing the State Association coordination committee and 2 years as APRO President. Great job, Tiger!!!
2) Missouri was the "State Association of the Year"!!!!! We'd like to think everyone for their hard work in 2015 and we really think that the combination of an excellent trade show and the 5 city community service project was what separated us from the rest. This is the 6th time that Missouri has won this award, which is the most of any state in the country, and the 3rd time since 2007!!!
3) Mark Connelly was elected as the new APRO President!!!! Mark has done a great job on our board, plus serves on the Iowa and Florida boards, APRO board, and the Aaron's board, plus he's the Chief Operator of 50 plus stores throughout the country.

MRDA 2014 Tradeshow Recap
Jun 30, 2014
Morning Golf and Fishing Events bled into a lively afternoon trade show at Lake Ozark, Missouri where the 10th annual MRDA Heartand of America Trade Show and Seminar cranked into high gear with an energized trade show followed by an awards banquet for golf and bass tournaments.
Current President Gary Ferriman, elected APRO President by the board last month at conference, addressed the "crossroads" he felt APRO had come to and sought, by taking the helm as president, to help guide the ship to safety. Ferriman, owner of Showplace Rent to Own in Ohio, arrived via plane, hitching a ride with David P. David (2012-2014) and landing in a nearby air field. Tiger Cleek (2008-2009) guided the fishing tournament, but caught no fish while fishing with Jr., and hence received no award, was happy to insert himself for absent golf tourney team winners for subsequnt photos. "It's changed a lot since I was last here," said Mikel(pronounced Michael) Bohannon a manger for National TV Sales and Rental in Noel, Missouri who has not been to an MRDA show since 1996. "Back then it was just Missouri, we didn't even realize how many of us there are. When I registered this year I saw a link that said download brochure. We sure didn't have brochures in 1996." Although the show has been called the "Heartland of America" show for a decade, it has existed for at least 27 years in some form or fashion. Or simply the MRDSA "meedting." David Moore, a store manager for Rental City in Independence, Missouri, who is new to the industry and a first time Heartlander, said getting the opportunity to talk to vendors face to face was invaluable. "It's like, to talk to someone on the same level, with vendors that treat you like friends," Moore said. "And meeting other dealers from other companies to see how they do it, oh yeah, I'll be back." Three percent was claimed by Libertarian Jeffrey Blunt and one percent was claimed by Green Party candidate Ed Scharf.
Canseco had enjoyed a solid lead at the start of the vote count with 55 percent of votes. About an hour later, he fell to 49 percent of votes to Gallego's 47 percent.
The two were neck and neck after most of the races had already been called. Just before midnight, Gallego sealed the race for district 23.

APRO Awards MRDA State Association of the Year!
Jul 28, 2010
MRDA President John "Tiger" Cleek Jr. - "Missouri was honored to receive the State Association of the Year award for the 5th time and I would like to thank all of our board members and officers for their hard work this year. This year was quite eventful as we donated 35 computers to a middle school in Fredericktown, MO as part of our annual Computers 4 Kidz program. In June we hosted the 6th Annual Heartland of America Regional Tradeshow and Seminar at the Lake of the Ozarks and had one of our best shows ever with approximately 260 attendees. We would like to thank all of the vendors who participated in our show and especially the ones who provided sponsorships for our events. One of our major accomplishments this year was the design of our new MRDA website. Thanks to APRO and Imagery Marketing, plus with the efforts of our communications chairman, Macy Mitchell of All American Rental, we were able to get a first class website for our state association at a very reasonable rate of $1800. Coming this fall in September we will continue our fall training in St. Louis with a 1 day training seminar featuring 4 different vendors and store level employees will be able to attend this event for free as members of MRDA. We also owe a great amount of gratitude to Ken Steiner, our Executive Assistant, as he plans and organizes all of our events and makes our jobs easy."
A quote follows next from APRO Executive Director Bill Keese on the success of the MRDA...
